Even before it was listed in the World Heritage Site, Georgetown was already popular for its tourists attractions. Now that it is being celebrated as one, you will find that visiting Georgetown to be more tourist friendly than before. Take your time to venture into Georgetown where you will be amazed by all that it can offer. The Winner of the Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Conservation in 2000 is the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Located at Leith Street, this is one of the oldest residences here. Fort Cornwallis overlooks the seabed and was built on the first foothold of Captain Francis Light in 1793 while the Khoo Kongsi in Cannon Street is an old residence built by the Khoo clain in the mid 1800s. Other attractions here include the Pinang Peranakan Mansion at Church Street while over at Burma Lane, you can visit the Wat Chaiya Mangkalaram, a Buddhist temple.

The Queen Victoria Clock Tower is located around Light Street which is a 60 feet clock tower to commemorate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. The multi cultural city here would exude a lot of other religious sites like the Kapitan Keling Mosque, the Kuan Yin Teng and the St George’s Church.

Otherwise you can visit the more historical sites like the Penang State Museum, the Clan Jetties or the Christian Cemetery.

For those who are into shopping, there are an abundance of choices here. you can start with looking into the mega shopping malls here. Gurney Plaza is located at Gurney drive, which is a stone’s throw away from the famous food court. Branded goods like Gianni Versace and Esprit are the common outlets here as well as anchor tenant Parkson.

Alternatively, you can drive out a little further to Island Plaza which is a smaller mall that houses Starbucks and Metrojaya. The Bukit Jambul Complex and KOMTAR are also a few others you can visit.

In the city center, you can also visit the very huge Prangin Mall, Penang Plaza and One-Stop Midlands Park where you will definitely be able to find a bargain. Queensbay Mall is a newly opened mall which is now the biggest one in the island. The mall houses Jusco, cineplexes and many more retailers.

For those of you who like to look for bargains, head out to the Little Penang Street Market at Upper Penang Road. The market is held every last Sunday of the month and this is where you can find a huge array of arts and crafts as well as home made items. Little India is where you can find India traditional items. Otherwise take a short drive to the suburban Batu Feringghi at night where you can find the night market held every evening where you can find a lot of imitation goods and souvenirs as well.
